Description

Details

Carcharodontosaurus was a giant theropod dinosaur that lived during the Middle Cretaceous (93-100 million years ago) in the region of North West Africa, spanning from Morocco to Niger.

The genus Carcharodontosaurus is named after the shark genus Carcharodon (itself named from the Greek καρχαρο (karcharo) meaning "jagged" or "sharp" and οδοντο (odonto) meaning "teeth")), and σαυρος (sauros), meaning "lizard" — "Carcharodon lizard".

Diagnosis for Carcharodontosaurus saharicus :
“ Carcharodontosaurid theropod with skull characterized by a laterally protruding ventral margin of the maxillary external antorbital fossa; a deep and ventrally-facing fossa between the inner wall of the maxilla and the anteromedial process; a deep and dorsoventrally protruding lacrimal-frontal suture; an invaginated anteromedial corner of the supratemporal fossa; and distinct enamel wrinkles on both mesial and distal margins of mesial (anterior) and mid maxillary crowns ”
