Petrified Wood Limb Slab
Conifer Tree Limb with Insect Burrows

College Station, Texas

Yegua Formation

Eocene Period - 40 million years old

Cut and polished by us at AETC, this petrified wood slab shows great preservation and cellular structure, placing it in the conifer group. Insect burrows are present in several areas on the upper region where the wood has a lighter color going against the grain. A very intriguing snapshot of time from 40 million years ago. There is also a dry crack seam which filled in with a striking blue chalcedony.

Details

During the Middle Eocene Period - 40 million years ago - much of Eastern Texas and Louisiana were a vast swamp land with tropical trees including hardwoods, palms, and primitive conifers. These pieces of petrified wood tell an interesting story, in that if each piece is justified correctly, you can see which side laid resting in the swampy bog, and which was exposed to the water current and eroded away. An easy way to tell is where the center core is, it will almost always be closer to the eroded side.
