Thunderegg Agate

Chubuk (North of Ankara), Turkey

Nodule : 3.97 in x 3.38 in

1 in = 2.54 cm / 1 cm = 0.39 in

A nodule from the northern Ankara region of Turkey, this specimen shows fantastic common opal waterlines seperating the blue agate over a large display.

Complete geode nodules like these are rarely offered and are typically cut or slabbed to make jewelry or other lapidary material.

Turkey is famous for the agates discovered there, many containing “stick agate” pseudomorphs (calcite and zeolite) inclusions. Found amongst the mountain hillsides and streams, many of these nodules have moss growing on them.

The zeolites had grown in the thunderegg cavities first, before being replaced and preserved by agate secondarily.
